EXPERTS PREDICT VERY STRONG EL NIÑO SEASON
El Niño, a warming of water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, can increase the likelihood of a wet winter locally, including heavy rain, flooding, landslides and damaging coastal conditions. While scientists are increasingly confident this year's El Niño will translate into more rain for California, the historic record locally is mixed, with only a handful of the approximately nine strong El Niños since the 1950s bringing a messy winter to Santa Cruz County.
In the event of a large scale community emergency, volunteers are often needed to play a critical role in providing general services ranging from post event clean-up to staffing phones. Each emergency is different in terms of need and scale, so it is difficult to identify exact duties ahead of time. In the event of a disaster, The Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County works closely with emergency response organizations to identify which volunteer needs are greatest. During heavy winter storms the greatest need is usually filling sandbags and delivering sandbags to elderly and disabled residents.Age Minimum (with Adult): 18+, Minimum Age:18+
