Opportunity Details
What? The FireSafe Council of Santa Cruz County is looking for volunteers to help educate interested community members on home hardening and defensible space practices and who can commit to 2-4 property assessments per month during the 2024 wildfire season and beyond. The ability to drive to home owner properties is required. Volunteers will participate in a comprehensive training sponsored by the FireSafe Council to become a qualified home assessor. There will be a required in-person training early this summer season, exact dates TBD.
Why? Santa Cruz County is currently preparing for a potentially intense wildfire season this fall. Most of our county falls within the high risk zones for wildfire. Along with the complications and progressively worsening situation with home insurance non-renewals in this area, this is catapulting the need to address the wildfire risk at the individual, neighborhood and community-wide level.
Who? The Fire Safe Council of Santa Cruz County is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit whose mission is to educate and mobilize the people of Santa Cruz County to protect their community, homes, and environment from wildfire. The council provides free, educational home hardening and defensible space property assessments for most Santa Cruz County residents living in wildfire risk areas. With the current rise in requests for these assessments, we are looking to recruit new volunteer home ignition zone assessors to help with this educational program.
If you are interested in becoming an assessor for us and want to learn more about the process, please fill out this online survey and you will be contacted soon:
