Youth Storytelling Teachers & Helpers

This summer help Youth Now's middle school summer program by teaching or helping in a fun new afternoon performing arts workshop. Youth Now is dedicated to helping kids raise their academic success, providing free tutoring services for Watsonville middle and high school students all through the school year. During the month of July, Youth Now runs a very popular summer school with academic subjects in the morning and enruichment classes in the afternoon.

The arts can make a big difference in a child's learning, motivation and experience. IF is teaming up with Youth Now to create an afternoon performing arts workshop focusing on the art of storytelling. Storytelling is one of humanity's most ancient arts, and it's now regaining importance in modern society.

In this summer program, we'll introduce middle school students to a variety of classical and multicultural literature, and then coach each student to create a wonderful performance piece based on a story of their choice. Students will gain appreciation of literature, critical thinking and research skills needed to develop their presentation, interpersonal and oral communication skills that will support their development as a students and community members.

This is a pilot program which we hope to learn from and develop further. Volunteers will use lesson plans and materials provided by IF to teach and coach children, helping them to be great, thoughtful public speakers. And the lessons, as well as interacting with kids in this fun, creative program, will make a wonderfully enriching experience for volunteers as well.

The storytelling class will run from 1:30AM to 3PM Monday-Thursday during the month of July 2012. There will be two groups of students, a Monday/Wednesday group and a Tuesday/Thursday group. Ideally volunteers can commit for one or both of the groups for the entire month. The project will end with a student performance. Assistance with transportation costs and/or modest stipends may be available - please contact IF for details.

If you have experience or interest in performing arts, teaching or literature, be sure to sign up! Thank you and if you have questions please contact Anita at ifexecdirector@gmail.com
