Restoration Day at Scotts Creek, Wilder Ranch State Park
January 12, 2019 10 am to 1 pm Wilder Ranch State ParkJust a little change of plans from weeding . . . to another side of restoration -- planting natives. This Saturday's work party is a collaborative project with the Habitat Restoration Team of Groundswell Ecology and State Parks.
Portions of the coastal bluffs were once used for agriculture and are now left fallow leading the way for exotic annual grasses to dominate the landscape. Restoring these areas with native plants will support a wide range of insects, mammals and birds, as well as increase filtration of runoff from surrounding agricultural lands before it reaches the ocean. State Parks has prepared roughly two acres of annual grasslands and have nearly 8,000 native plants, consisting of shrubs, grasses and forbs to place in the ground! Come join our local community in learning about local ecology and help plant native coastal plants that will support wildlife for years to come. We will meet at the usual place at Wilder Headquarters (directions below). And, if you want to stay later than 1 pm, you are certainly welcomed to do so! Please wear comfortable, layered cloths and bring water and gloves (if you have them). Tools will be provided. Directions to Wilder Ranch: Take Highway 1 North through Santa Cruz, and continue north to the turn off on the left hand side for Wilder Ranch. Watch for the sign indicating a left turn. Once at the kiosk, let the person there know you are volunteering, and they will give you a parking pass. Meet us at the interpretive sign by the bathrooms in the parking lot.
